A measured approach
Assessment begins with the symptoms, medical history, risk factors, and the practical impact on daily life.
Investigations are selected to answer a clinical question, rather than to create unnecessary testing.
Treatment discussions include conservative management, minimally invasive options, open surgery, and the reasons a procedure may not be appropriate.
Research, Clinical trials and Teaching
Oliver has published widely in cardiovascular disease and vascular surgery research. His research has been funded by the Medical research Council in the UK, and Health Research Council in New Zealand. Oliver has leadership roles in clinical trials including the New Zealand arm of the international Women's Small Aneurysm Trial (WARRIORS), the IntercepTEVAR trial (aiming to reduce stroke as a complication of surgery). Oliver has been a section editor of the European Journal for Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, the leading journal for vascular surgery. He teaches undergraduate medical students and supervises MMedSc and PhD candidates at the University of Otago.

Professional profiles
External profiles provide further academic, publication, and professional background.
Private appointments may be requested directly through Christchurch Vascular Group. A supporting letter from a GP or specialist can be helpful because it provides clinical background, medication details, and previous imaging.
Are urgent symptoms managed through this website?
No. Sudden weakness, chest pain, severe limb pain, a cold or pale limb, symptoms of stroke, or heavy bleeding need urgent medical care. In New Zealand, call 111 or attend an emergency department.
